Room 101 Speech
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away,” this was said by French poet, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The world will always have to keep moving forward and for us to make sure that we’re going in the right direction; we must take away the things that are blocking our way.
The first thing that I want to put into Room 101 would be overpopulation. It is defined as the condition where an organism’s numbers exceed the carrying capacity of its habitat. The world is ours to live in, but who would want to live in an unhealthy, unsafe and too crowded environment?
By the end of 2010, the world population was estimated at roughly 6.85 billion, and is expected to be 7 billion by the end of this year. The world is not getting any bigger but the population still does. Let me give you a clearer example.
China is the world’s most populated country. It has a population of about 1.33 billion. That’s almost a fifth of the entire world population. The population density in the country is 140 people per square kilometre, and that’s a lot of people.
China has more than enough things to be proud of in terms of population. The two biggest cities in the world, which are Beijing and Shanghai, are both found in China. They both have a population of 22 million and only has a difference of 210, 000.
Because of this, China was forced to implement laws, the worst of which is the One Child Policy. It is a strict implementation that states that every couple in China is only allowed one child.
But everything has its side effects. Because of this law, many families are killing their new born babies if they are not males. Hundreds of babies are being drowned, smothered, or abandoned by their families because they believe that having more than one child is a criminal act, and is punishable by law. Abortion also became abundant.
Is this acceptable? Do you want the world to come to a point where the one child policy would have to be implemented worldwide because it’s the only solution applicable?
The second thing that I would put in Room 101 is Global Warming. It’s such a cliché because for so many years now, people have been trying to prevent it but it still happens. Maybe it is useless to intervene with natural phenomena. But if I can do something to make it disappear, I know it would benefit everyone in the world.
Take a look at Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a country in south Asia just in between India and Burma, and on top of the Bay of Bengal. It is a heavy populated low lying nation with much agricultural land.
But today, because of global warming, Bangladesh has to always watch out for rising sea levels and increasing rainfall. The people who are living here have been experiencing the full force of drastic climatic changes. Flooding has become frequent and crops are being wiped out, homes are destroyed and diseases are spread widely.
Global warming is everyone’s fault and responsibility. But everyone can also be a solution. We will never be able to fully stop global warming, but showing Mother Nature that we care will never hurt. Let us love the world we live in so it will never stop loving us.
The last thing that I want to put in Room 101 would be corruption. Corruption is the abuse of public power, office, or resources by elected government officials for personal gain. These people were elected because the people trusted them so it’s their responsibility as leaders to make sure that they are doing the right things.
As of 2010, the leading country in corruption according to Transparency International is Somalia. The situation of the country is worse then inhumane. The United Nations have warned that 800,000 children are expected to die from starvation. International agencies all want to help and give food but terrorist groups like the Al-Qaeda are making them back off.
The economy has downgraded, famine and drought are being experienced by innocent people because of the government who should’ve been protecting them. But they don’t have a stable government; it controls virtually no territory, and provides no services. The only thing its ministers are good at is stealing the aid that they get. The last audit report showed that 96 percent of the aid that they received had been stolen.
These are people too. We should not let this happen, as individuals, as a country and as the majority of the human race. Overpopulation, Global Warming and Corruption are all worldwide problems and having them disappear forever will be such a great help. That’s why I decided to put them into Room 101. I know it’s not possible but if it is, I know it will make the world such a better place.
